“The senator says he’s a “no” on Biden’s Build Back Better Act, ensuring that the struggling people of his state fall further behind.
Joe Manchin’s net worth, according to the money-in-politics web site Open Secrets, was $7.6 million in 2018, when he last sought reelection. Median household income this year in the state of West Virginia, according to the St. Louis Fed, is $51,615. That’s nearly $30,000 below the national average.
And this, in a nutshell, is American politics generally and the United States Senate particularly: a multimillionaire old white guy telling poor people that they just need to get off their asses and work and the government shouldn’t be helping them.”
“”[W]e are disappointed that the bill will not pass,” Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America International, said in a statement. “We urge Senator Manchin to revisit his opposition to this legislation and work with his colleagues to pass something that will help keep coal miners working, and have a meaningful impact on our members, their families, and their communities.””
“The senator from West Virginia is bought and paid for by Big Coal. With his help the dying industry is pulling one final heist — and the entire planet may pay the price”
He never intended to vote for Voting Rights or Biden’s Build Back Better Bill, his donors won’t let him,
“The Black Lung Disability Trust Fund is in danger of insolvency, which could affect industry veterans stricken with the disease.”
Donors Trump Voters
“An underexamined aspect of Manchin’s pro-business positions in the Senate is his early membership in the American Legislative Exchange Council.“
This is not what your constituents want to hear Joe Manchin,
Big Oil and Joe Manchin – Climate Change?
“The senator won’t quit fossil fuels and is going to neuter the reconciliation bill — and we’re all going to pay the price”
“Since 2010, the American Gas Association’s PAC has donated $15,000 to Manchin according to the FEC. In the same time frame, Exxon Mobil’s corporate PAC contributed $12,500 and the American Petroleum Institute contributed $10,000. PACs and individuals affiliated with FirstEnergy Corp are together one of Manchin’s biggest contributors, and have given the senator $147,950 since 2009. The American Chemistry Council, whose members include companies like Shell and Exxon, spent $200,000 to support Manchin in his 2018 campaign.
Manchin has received more support from the mining industry, which employs 2 percent of West Virginia’s workforce, more than any other Democratic lawmaker.”
Hey Joe, YOUR people Want You to VOTE YES,
“Working-class people – even Trump voters – understand the Build Back Better plan will benefit them”
But those pesky donors,
“If Democrats allow the party’s Manchinema wing to derail prescription drug pricing reforms, they could lose their ability to govern
Manchin has, during his Senate career, collected $506,265 from pharmaceutical interests—including $199,015 so far in the 2022 cycle, despite the fact that, like Sinema, he won’t be on the ballot until 2024.”
The people of West Virginia are not only watching you Joe, but they will feel the impact of your vote, regardless of how you vote.
“Advocates from several groups demonstrated outside of Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-W.Va.) houseboat on Monday, protesting the senator’s opposition to Democrats’ multitrillion-dollar reconciliation package.
“Democratic leadership has pushed their $3.5 trillion spending bill along without buy-in from the moderate West Virginia senator.”
““What’s the need? There is no timeline. I want to understand it,” Manchin said in an interview on Thursday as he walked to his office. “I don’t think anything runs out. Right now, we’ve got good nutrition for children, a lot of things are covered right now clear [into] next year.””
The Need? 2018 (Pre-COVID):
“West Virginia has a growing poverty problem, and experts there who study the issue say Americans in every state should pay attention.
The Appalachian state is, along with Delaware, just one of two states where poverty rose last year, bucking the national trend of growing incomes and declining hardship, according to U.S. Census data released earlier this month. West Virginia’s poverty rate climbed to 19.1 percent last year from 17.9 percent, making it just one of four states with a poverty rate above 18 percent.”
2021, people are leaving your state Joe,
“In 2010, West Virginia’s population was 1.85 million. Fast-forward to 2020, and the population is 1.79 million people, the Census Bureau reported.
The 3.2 percent population drop caused the state to lose a congressional seat and marked one of the country’s biggest population declines over the past decade, The Associated Press reported.
There are multiple reasons for the exodus, including high poverty rates, low pay, lack of opportunities and poor internet connection, according to the AP.”
If there was only a bill to address poverty, jobs and internet connectivity…
“WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate has passed a nearly $1 trillion bipartisan plan to rebuild roads and bridges, modernize public works systems and boost broadband internet, among other improvements to the nation’s infrastructure.”
The People of West Virginia (and other red states) need you to vote YES on Infrastructure Bill and the Reconciliation Budget Joe,
“Charleston, WV – New data released today from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and an analysis of data from its ongoing Household Pulse Survey and other sources paints a bleak picture. People across West Virginia — particularly West Virginians of color and those with low incomes — continue to face dire economic hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, making the need for bold action at the state and federal levels clearer than ever.
An estimated 278,734 West Virginians lived in poverty in 2019, for a total poverty rate of 16.0 percent. While poverty declined by 1.8 percentage points from 2018, West Virginia’s poverty rate is still 3.7 percentage points higher than the national average, making it the 6th highest rate among the 50 states.
West Virginia’s median household income was an estimated $48,850 in 2019, $16,862 below the national average. While West Virginia’s median household income increased in 2019, adjusting for inflation, West Virginia still had the 2nd lowest median household income among the 50 states.”
