What It Means That Florida Will Allow Conservative PragerU Content in Schools

“How To Be a Rational Patriot”

“How To Be a Victor & Not a Victim”

“The goal of PragerU and its kids division is to provide an alternative to what it sees as a leftwing perspective trending in American public schools and media in recent years, its CEO tells TIME. “America’s education system has been hijacked by one side,” says Marissa Streit, PragerU CEO. “How are we going to have great teachers, if the teachers themselves are basically held hostage to one ideology? That is essentially what we’re trying to break here.”

PragerU’s content had critics in academia even before it became an approved educational resource in Florida. PragerU has published videos questioning the scientific consensus on the extent of fossil fuels’ contribution to climate change. Historian Kevin Kruse went viral on Twitter for fact-checking a PragerU video about why the South predominantly votes Republican (PragerU argued the racism that once defined the South “doesn’t anymore”), accusing it of “cherry-picking” info. “It’s very important to recognize that these are not educational videos,” says Francesca Tripodi, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who found during 2017 research that college students raved about PragerU’s trustworthiness as an academic source. “These videos are very explicitly created to get people to think a certain way… And the goal of PragerU is to advance a conservative agenda.””

Teachers association sues Tennessee education department over race education restrictions

“The association is challenging restrictions on the teaching of race in schools.

A teachers association in Tennessee has filed a federal lawsuit against the state education department’s restrictions on curriculum regarding race and gender in public schools.

The Tennessee Education Association and five Tennessee public school educators behind the lawsuit believe the Tennessee policy that bans certain concepts from being included in curriculum, programs or supplemental materials complicates how students learn about “controversial” subjects such as slavery, the Holocaust, 9/11 and more.”

As NRA and GOP pushed for permit-less open carry laws, this started happening:

In a first, firearms were leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens in 2020

Alarming rise in youth gun deaths breaks down very differently by race

Armed campus police do not prevent school shootings, research shows

“Multiple studies have found no association between the presence of armed officers in schools and the deterrence of violence.”

High Gun Sales And More Time At Home Have Led To More Accidental Shootings By Kids

BUT THE BOOKS!!!! This is a lie:

The Truth:

What Florida Doesn’t Want You to Know About Its Book Bans

“I was in the U.K., in rehearsals for a musical I’d co-written based on Markus Zusak’s novel The Book Thief, which is set in Nazi Germany. The director was determined to physically set a prop book on fire each night because of how shocking and powerful it was to watch. We were testing it out for the first time when the notification popped on my computer screen: about yet another parent complaining that my novel was inappropriate for high school students.

In the past six months, my books have been banned dozens of times in dozens of school districts. As sad as it seems, I was getting used to the emails from PEN America’s Jonathan Friedman telling me that yet again, my novel was under attack. But this week, something truly egregious happened. In Martin Country School District, 92 books were pulled from the school library shelves. Twenty of them were mine.

The 92 books fell into three categories: those with mature content, those written by BIPOC authors, and those written by LGBTQ authors. My books were removed because they were, according to the sole parent who made the challenge, “adult romance that should not be on school shelves.” It is worth noting I do not write adult romance. The majority of the books that were targeted do not even have a kiss in them. What they do have, however, are issues like racism, abortion rights, gun control, gay rights, and other topics that encourage kids to think for themselves.

When I read through the list of the 20 novels of mine that were pulled from the Martin County School District bookshelves, one surprised me the most. The Storyteller is a novel about the Holocaust. It chronicles the growth of anti-Semitism and fascism in Nazi Germany. There was a strange irony that a parent wanted this particular book removed, because it felt a bit like history repeating itself.”

Florida schools directed to cover or remove classroom books that are not vetted

“The state said its “Stop WOKE” act applies to books displayed in classrooms.”

Ron DeSantis Is Lying About Why Bookshelves in Florida Classrooms Are Empty

“The Florida governor claims that it’s not his legislation that is limiting what books students can read. But local parents beg to differ.”

Roberto Clemente?

This is called SPIN:

DeSantis calls Roberto Clemente book removal “a joke”

Catch up fast: Duval County Public Schools, which includes Jacksonville, Florida, announced late last month that it was “taking further steps to comply with Florida laws on library books.”

  • Those steps include a “formal review of classroom libraries,” the district said. The 2005 illustrated children’s book on Clemente is one of those under review. It has been out of libraries for months.

The intrigue: The Clemente book references the racism the Black Puerto Rican player faced in the U.S. — something well documented in his interviews and biographies.”

Hank Aaron!

The ignorance is the point. Kids books about Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente get censored | Opinion
