August 7, 2019 – Rich Lowry being Rich Lowry, in other words, Pro-Trump,
“Trump is not a terrorist, a supporter of terrorism. To suggest otherwise is a slander born of partisan hatred.

RL: “President Trump’s immigration agenda has always been considered exclusionary and prejudiced by progressives; now they consider it tainted by mass murder.
The El Paso massacre, carried out by a white nationalist waging a lunatic war against Hispanic immigration, is being used as a bludgeon against Trump and immigration restriction more broadly.”
RL: “After years spent trying to rule immigration restriction out of bounds, as much as argue the merits, the left is doubling down on ruling immigration restriction out of bounds. “
RL: “It can’t be that the only reason for protecting the border, rejecting bogus asylum-seekers, reorienting the legal immigration system toward skills rather than family unification and reducing overall numbers is rank hatred bordering on homicidal malice.”
“At least 16 high-profile attacks have been motivated by white nationalist conspiracy theories”
“Racist attacks in which shooters claim to be motivated by environmental concerns are becoming increasingly common, as is the ideology behind them.”
RL: “It can’t be that the only choice is between extremely latitudinarian policies that allow asylum seekers into the country, often never to be seen again, or mass murder.”
Most Released Families Attend Immigration Court Hearings
The latest case-by-case records from the Immigration Courts indicate that as of the end of May 2019 one or more removal hearings had already been held for nearly 47,000 newly arriving families seeking refuge in this country. Of these, almost six out of every seven families released from custody had shown up for their initial court hearing. Usually multiple hearings are required before a case is decided. For those who are represented, more than 99 percent had appeared at every hearing held. See Figure 1. Thus, court records directly contradict the widely quoted claim that “90 Percent of Recent Asylum Seekers Skipped Their Hearings.[1]“
Under our current system, there is no legal requirement that immigrants actually receive notice, let alone timely notice, of their hearing. Given many problems in court records on attendance and in the system for notifying families of the place and time of their hearings, these appearance rates were remarkably high. These and other findings discussed below are based upon an analysis of court records conducted by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) at Syracuse University. These court records, updated through May 2019, were obtained through a series of FOIA requests submitted by TRAC to the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).
RL: “It can’t be that the only respectable position on immigration, safe for the general public, is whatever the Democrats’ center of gravity on the issue is at any given time (which is always in flux and always moving left).
First, let’s stipulate that Trump’s words on immigration often are crude and inflammatory and he should realize that the president of the United States shouldn’t talk about this issue like he’s a click-bait columnist for RightWingNews.com.”
Two months earlier:
Straight out of “Mein Kampf”
“”Nobody has ever seen anything like we’re witnessing right now. It is a very sad thing for our country,” Trump said in a September 2023 interview.”
When talk radio and far right media keeps beating the drumbeat of hate, some people are listening and watching….. the hate has to stop.
RL: “That said, nothing he’s ever said could possibly justify indiscriminately shooting people. Trump is not a terrorist, a supporter of terrorism or an enabler or terrorism. To suggest otherwise is a slander born of partisan hatred.”
The El Paso shooter’s apparent manifesto overlaps with some of Trump’s rhetoric, but what gives the manifesto its motive force is its apocalyptic argument that slaughter is the way to fight “to reclaim” the country.
RL: “The gulf between that view and Trump’s—that we should protect the border by getting Congress to build a wall and change some highly technical asylum rules—is vast. It is the difference between justifying criminality and advocating legislation, between quitting on America and calling for policies to solve one of its problems.”
RL: “Much is made of Trump’s use of the word “invasion,” which also features in the manifesto. This is a loaded term that should be avoided. It speaks to a hostile intent among immigrants who are, by and large, simply coming here because they think they can improve their lives. Although the numbers and relatively robust organization of the various caravans, and the sheer scale of the current migrant inflow, make the word more apt than for routine immigration.”
Say something often enough and people start believing it! Words have consequences!
RL: “But, again, the impulse to gun down these supposed invaders in cold blood while they are shopping at Walmart and the impulse to exclude them from entry into the country, or quickly and safely return them home once here, don’t exist in the same moral universe.”
RL: “For all that the language police profess to care deeply about words, they aren’t very careful about rendering Trump’s. No one notes that in his Florida rally where a rally-goer notoriously yelled “shoot them,” and Trump shook his head and smiled, “only in the Panhandle,” the president was in the midst of saying of border patrol agents, “Don’t forget, we don’t let them, and we can’t let them, use weapons.” “
RL: “The discrediting of views that show up in the manifesto only works one way. The shooter expresses a fear of automation and support for the Universal Basic Income. Should we hold that against Andrew Yang? The shooter fears we’re on the verge of an environmental disaster. Should Jay Inslee tone it down?”
RL: “When a member of antifa was shot dead by police while attacking an ICE facility in Washington state, Democrats weren’t made to answer for their harsh attacks on immigration enforcement.”
RL: “It’s even a count against Trump that the shooter, too, says that the Democrats favor “open borders.” If it’s going to be unacceptable to use the term “open borders” of a party that is manifestly getting closer and closer to embracing a policy of open borders, we might as well shut down the immigration debate now.”
Rich Lowry closes with:
RL: “Which is, of course, part of the point. What much of the left doesn’t want to acknowledge is that restrictionists have a sincere belief that secure borders and a reformed legal immigration system would be better for our laws, our economy and our cultural cohesion.
If Trump is a deeply flawed tribune for this point of view, he’s not culpable of murder, either. The charge that he somehow is is yet another symptom of our rapidly degrading public debate rather than a call to elevate it.”
Invasion? Where have we heard that venomous, ridiculous word before? Where have we seen it?
On Facebook, for starters. By one tally, Trump has run around 2,200 Facebook ads since May 2018 mentioning the word “invasion,” most reportedly having to do with immigration. So is Trump responsible for inciting the attack in El Paso? He’s not blameless, that’s for sure.
Which is, of course, part of the point. What much of the left doesn’t want to acknowledge is that restrictionists have a sincere belief that secure borders and a reformed legal immigration system would be better for our laws, our economy and our cultural cohesion.
Conclusions on Immigration and Crime in the United States
Researchers in the United States have pointed out that the urban crime problem is not generated by immigrants, legal or undocumented, and that immigrants are not increasing crime rates. Socially disadvantaged neighborhoods may, however, make immigrant groups more susceptible to crime victimization when social support networks do not exist or are lacking. Despite the research findings on crime and immigration, the U.S. public mistakenly believes foreign-born immigrants to be dangerous criminals. To respond to undocumented immigration and the public fear of crime, anti-immigration laws enacted in the early 21st century attempt to hasten the deportation processes for undocumented immigrants. Such laws have increased the workload in the U.S. courts and consequently deportation is likely when the undocumented immigrant has committed a serious violent crime or agrees to removal. Immigration laws and policies should consider the unintended consequences of crime victimization on undocumented immigrants and the global conditions that cause mass migrations of people across dangerous borders.
The overriding impact of immigrants is to strengthen and enrich American culture, increase the total output of the economy, and raise the standard of living of American citizens. Immigrants are advantageous to the United States for several reasons: (1) Since they are willing to take a chance in a new land, they are self-selected on the basis on motivation, risk taking, work ethic, and other attributes beneficial to a nation. (2) They tend to come to the United States during their prime working years (the average age is 28), and they contribute to the workforce and make huge net contributions to old-age entitlement programs, primarily Social Security. (3) Immigrants tend to fill niches in the labor market where demand is highest relative to supply, complementing rather than directly competing with American workers. (4) Many immigrants arrive with extremely high skill levels, and virtually all, regardless of skill level, bring a strong desire to work. (5) Their children tend to reach high levels of achievement in American schools and in society at large.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham faced a backlash Thursday after saying, Wednesday night, that “the America we know and love doesn’t exist anymore,” citing immigration and demographics.
“68 percent of white evangelicals say America has no responsibility to house refugees.”
