I grew up in Alabama, and despite Engel v Vitale my first and second grade teachers opened each day with a prayer (they were also my Sunday School teachers) that ended with “in Jesus Name We Pray…” and every day two of my friends stood in the hallway until the prayer was done – they were my Jewish friends and their parents did not want them to be ‘converted’ to my Southern Baptist religion. I learned early to respect others’ religious views.

The First Amendment does not allow us to put a litmus test on a religion for entry into our nation. 

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

What frustrates me is how some people are so vocal about their Second Amendment rights but are willing to drive a luxury liner through the First Amendment:

​Perhaps if we  can dig into the issues motivating some people into wanting to do us harm we can diminish the threat?  If some are against us because of their economic lot in life, or lack of resources or even hope, perhaps we get the Peace Corps involved?

I know Peace Corps doesn’t stop ISIS. But to stop the next generation of haters, what if we improve some roads, create some irrigation, build some schools and hospitals, create an economy with jobs and some futures? Can we try another Marshall type Plan or take an improved and more effective LBJ Great Society on a world tour? Never know until we try.​
