- Logging interests cut down rain forest trees for timber used in flooring, furniture, and other items. Adopt Large Tracts using a multinational organization. Promote timber harvesting from other locations.
- Power plants and other industries cut and burn trees to generate electricity. Promote other sources of electricity. Think TVA.
- The paper industry turns huge tracts of rain forest trees into pulp. Same adoption idea – promote paper production in US and other markets.
- The cattle industry uses slash-and-burn techniques to clear ranch land. Same adoption plan but also promote cattle grazing in other locations. Work with major meat producers.
- Agricultural interests, particularly the soy industry, clear forests for cropland. Greenbelt programs like we utilize in the United States – promote US and other Soybean producers.
- Subsistence farmers slash-and-burn rain forest for firewood and to make room for crops and grazing lands. Same Greenbelt ideas. Promote manufacturing and jobs from that and other industries instead of farming.
- Mining operations clear forest to build roads and dig mines. Create programs to return the area to original condition once mining operations are complete at these locations.
- Governments and industry clear-cut forests to make way for service and transit roads. Create urban growth boundaries protecting specific areas from expansion. Purchase these tracts as permanent no-growth areas.
- Hydroelectric projects flood acres of rain forest. Provide expertise in river management to decrease flooding, again, think TVA
Q9. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR RELATIONS BETWEEN THE U.S. AND CUBA?
My chief-of-staff has been to Cuba. Loved the place. Has ideas on how we can improve our relationship with Cuba. We can benefit their residents and ours through a thawing of the relationship. We have to get to the bottom of the strange auditory attacks on our embassy workers! Help each other economically through free trade and tourism.
