Trump lawyers warn Supreme Court of ‘chaos and bedlam’ if states are allowed to bar him from 2024 ballot

“Former President Donald Trump is urging the US Supreme Court to reverse the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling that removed him from that state’s ballot.

The brief submitted by Trump’s attorneys Thursday to the high court sets out their arguments for why the state court erred when it issued the unprecedented decision last month.

“The Court should reverse the Colorado decision because President Trump is not even subject to section 3, as the President is not an ‘officer of the United States’ under the Constitution. And even if President Trump were subject to section 3 he did not ‘engage in’ anything that qualifies as ‘insurrection,’” Trump’s attorneys argued.

The efforts, Trump team argues, “promise to unleash chaos and bedlam if other state courts and state officials follow Colorado’s lead and exclude the likely Republican presidential nominee from their ballots.”

The Colorado Supreme Court last month said Trump is constitutionally ineligible to run in 2024 because the 14th Amendment’s ban on insurrectionists holding office covers his conduct on January 6, 2021.

The US Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to hear the case, accepting an appeal brought by Trump. The justices are separately involved in other matters that could impact the federal criminal case against the former president.

Threats fly as Jim Jordan’s bid to be US House Speaker turns ugly

Several Republicans told reporters they had been subject to a pressure campaign by supporters of Mr Jordan, who lost a second vote for the gavel on Wednesday.

Republican lawmakers say they have been targeted by intimidation tactics, including death threats, from allies of Jim Jordan as his bid for the US House of Representatives speakership falters.

“”If you want to get to President Trump you’re going to have to go through me, and you’re going to have to go through 75 million Americans just like me. That’s not a threat, that’s a public service announcement,” she said, referring to the 74.2 million Americans who voted for Trump in 2020.”

The Psychiatrist Who Warned Us That Donald Trump Would Unleash Violence Was Absolutely Right

Violent themes were becoming a staple of Republican campaign rhetoric well before the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago search unleashed a fresh torrent of inciteful messaging.

Joe Scarborough and others laughed at this in 2009:

“Scarborough keeps digging”

SCARBOROUGH KEEPS DIGGING…. Joe Scarborough’s on-air commentary is nearly always disheartening, but this morning was especially frustrating.

I can appreciate why the former far-right Republican congressman is feeling a little sheepish right now. Yesterday, Media Matters released a video showing reactions from conservative media personalities in April to a report from the Department of Homeland Security, warning law enforcement about the potential for violence from fringe radicals. The clip montage shows Scarborough not only dismissing the DHS report, but laughing hysterically at the very idea behind the report. He told his national television audience that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano “has gone nuts.”

Of course, in light of the recent killings at the hand of some of these right-wing extremists, Scarborough’s laughter and dismissive attitude appears especially misguided now.”

The difference between Republicans and MAGA Republicans is violence

“Experts in many fields — domestic violent extremismcivil conflictdemocracy studies — are concerned about the likelihood that political violence will soon break out in the United States. Nearly 90 percent of Americans are concerned, too, according to a Washington Post-ABC News Poll conducted after the politically-motivated assault on Paul Pelosi.

Our group of clinicians and researchers approaches political violence as a public health problem. Like violence generally, political violence passes the Satcher test for health problems: It kills and injures people and has important adverse effects across entire populations.”

If you say enough ugly things about someone then perhaps someone may be motivated to do something to someone?

FBI uncovers plot to kidnap Michigan governor

Whitmer conspiracy allegations tied to boogaloo movement

“Fringe anti-government groups in Michigan have agitated for months against what they have claimed are illegal orders the state government put in place to contain the coronavirus. The groups got a boost in April when Trump tweeted “LIBERATE MICHIGAN,” which some online extremist movements at the time took as a call to arms.

Amy Cooter, a sociology professor and militia expert at Vanderbilt University, said Wolverine Watchmen is “a relatively new group that was spurred to action specifically by the pandemic and by Whitmer’s response to it.”

“I absolutely believe that Trump plays a role in encouraging actions like this, in calling individuals to be members of groups like this in the first place and encouraging folks to show up in person to protests — by stoking fears and making them feel like it is their responsibility to do something about it,” Cooter said.”

Trump and racism: What do the data say?

The Brookings Cafeteria podcast last week  discussed the role President Trump’s racist rhetoric has played in encouraging violence in America.

First, Donald Trump’s support in the 2016 campaign was clearly driven by racism, sexism, and xenophobia. While some observers have explained Trump’s success as a result of economic anxiety, the data demonstrate that
anti-immigrant sentiment
, racism, and sexism are much more strongly related to support for Trump.

Even more alarmingly, there is a clear correlation between Trump campaign events and incidents of prejudiced violence. FBI data show that since Trump’s election there has been
an anomalous spike in hate crimes
concentrated in counties where Trump won by larger margins. It was the second-largest uptick in hate crimes in the 25 years for which data are available, second only to the spike after September 11, 2001.

Though hate crimes are typically most frequent in the summer, in 2016 they peaked in the fourth quarter (October-December). This new, higher rate of hate crimes continued throughout 2017.
The association between Trump and hate crimes is not limited to the election itself. Another study, based on data collected by the Anti-Defamation League, shows that counties that hosted a Trump campaign rally in 2016 saw hate crime rates more than double  compared to similar counties that did not host a rally.

He blamed Jews for helping migrant caravans

He shared a video that another Gab.com user posted, purportedly of a Jewish refugee advocacy group HIAS on the US-Mexico border. Another post that Bowers commented on described HIAS’ overall efforts as “sugar-coated evil.”

He called those in migrant caravans ‘invaders’

According to his posts, Bowers believed that those in the migrant caravans were violent because they were attempting to leave countries that had high levels of violence. And Bowers repeatedly called them “invaders” on his Gab posts. “I have noticed a change in people saying ‘illegals’ that now say ‘invaders’,” read one post, six days before the shooting. “I like this.”

“We were safe until he started talking,” John Smith-Davis, 47, a retired Army veteran, said as he mourned with his friends at a memorial near the Walmart where a gunman opened fire Saturday. “He made us a target with his hateful rhetoric.”

Veronica Sanchez, a 23-year-old dental assistant, put it more succinctly: “He has said enough.”

El Paso, whose 680,000 people are mostly Latino and mostly Democrats, has long viewed Trump warily — and his most forceful statement since the massacre that has now claimed 22 lives there did little to change that.

“From my perspective, he is not welcome here,” Democratic Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, whose district includes a wide swath of the city, said Monday in an interview on MSNBC. “Words have consequences. The president has made my community and my people the enemy. He has told the country that we are people to be feared, people to be hated.”

A string of officials in El Paso and across the nation have condemned Trump for his steady flow of racist rhetoric, including his repeated warnings about an immigrant “invasion”— the same term used in a manifesto posted to 8chan believed to be written by the shooter.
“We have a president right now who traffics in this hatred, who incites this violence, who calls Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals, calls asylum seekers animals and an infestation,” Beto O’Rourke, the Democratic presidential candidate who represented El Paso in Congress, said Sunday at a vigil.

In a sentencing memo filed last month, Sayoc’s attorneys said the 57-year-old former pizza deliverer became radicalized via a daily consumption of Trump’s tweets, Fox News, and conspiracy theories on the internet.
They said Sayoc sent the packages because he believed that “prominent Democrats were actively working to hurt him, other Trump supporters, and the country as a whole” — an idea that was reinforced by what he heard on Fox News and from the president himself.

When Trump announced he was running for president, Sayoc “enthusiastically supported him” and began watching Fox News religiously and planning his day around watching Fox & Friends in the morning and primetime host Sean Hannity in the evening, his attorneys said.
“We believe that the president’s rhetoric contributed to Mr. Sayoc’s actions in this offense,” Sayoc’s attorney Ian Howard Marcus Amelkin told the court Monday.
