Friday, November 19, 2021. I came home today exhausted and disgusted. I am 61 years old. I have seen a lot, being born in 1960 in Alabama. Nothing has really changed.

Polling during the Civil Rights Movement

Other than our schools (that are going back more and more to be segregated),

Some dirty words – HBO:

Evidence:

Schools are more segregated than 30 years ago. Here’s what’s driving the change.

“Across the country, nearly 40 percent of Black students were in highly segregated schools in 2018, up from 33 percent in 1993. And in places like Minneapolis; Charlotte, North Carolina; Milwaukee; and Tampa Bay, Florida, the increases were even sharper.”

What school segregation looks like in the US today, in 4 charts

“Yet, despite years of government desegregation efforts and the proven benefits of integrated schools, our recently published research shows that U.S. school segregation is higher than it has been in decades, even if there are no longer overt laws requiring racially segregated schools.”

“Additionally, more than 40% of black and Latino students attend intensely segregated schools, where at least 9 in 10 students are people of color. Most of these schools have a majority of low-income students, which a 2016 government report concluded harmed students’ educational opportunities.”

our water fountains, our theaters, our sporting events and our laundromats are desegregated, but nothing has changed much since the Brown v Board of Education decision, 1964 Civil Rights and 1965 Voting Rights Act.

Housing loans are still biased.

(Some dirty words – HBO):

Evidence:

The American dream while Black: ‘Locked in a vicious cycle’

“Advocates, scholars and officials say one of the clearest examples of that ongoing discrimination exists in the housing market, where the gap in homeownership rates between Black and white Americans is wider than it was before the Civil Rights movement.”

Our churches are still segregated.

Racial Segregation in the Church

“Today, 86 percent of American churches lack any meaningful racial diversity. It is still true that, as Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observed, “the most segregated hour of Christian America is eleven o’clock on Sunday morning.””

A great example of that,

68% of white evangelicals think America shouldn’t house refugees

“White evangelical Protestants are the most likely religious group to say that the United States has no responsibility to open its borders to refugees, according to a recent poll.”

Most white evangelicals approve of Trump travel prohibition and express concerns about extremism

“The partisan gap is mirrored by a religious one. About three-quarters of white evangelical Protestants (76%), most of whom identify with or lean toward the GOP, say they approve of the travel ban. In stark contrast, big majorities of black Protestants (84%) and religious “nones” (74%) – two strongly Democratic constituencies – disapprove of the executive order.”

They must have forgotten Matthew 25:31-46 (one of my favorite Bible verses since my days as a Royal Ambassador in our family’s Southern Baptist Church)

Matthew 25:31-46 King James Version

Evangelicals and some other Christians are not following Christ’s wishes,

Matthew 14:13-21 King James Version

When people protest for Black Lives Matter or other ‘liberal’ views, such as Women’s Rights or Voting Rights, their protests are looked down on and attacked, sometimes physically. Laws are passed to allow motorists to drive right through them.

State-level Republicans are making it easier to run over protesters

“Those protests were overwhelmingly peaceful, according to the Washington Post, and almost 98 percent resulted in no injuries to “participants, bystanders or police.” However, many Republican lawmakers have pushed a draconian legislative response anyway — even as incidents of drivers running down protesters have increased nationwide.”

“The Republican Party is doing its best to criminalize protest”

“In particular, the Florida bill signed this month by DeSantis is a sprawling measure that creates new criminal penalties for protesting, among other provisions. And while it purports to address “rioting” — DeSantis has called it “the strongest anti-rioting, pro-law enforcement piece of legislation in the country” — the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida warned last week that the bill effectively “criminalizes peaceful protest” in Florida.”

Republicans Have Introduced 81 Anti-Protest Laws in 34 States Just This Year

“There is also a glaring double standard in what issues are okay to protest about in Republicans’ eyes, and what types of crowds Republicans consider dangerous. While Republicans spewed lies about the Black Lives Matter protests for racial justice throughout last year, they downplayed the actual violence on display from supporters of former President Donald Trump on January 6.”

When ‘conservative’ protesters assemble to protest Covid shutdown policies or school board policies or for their ‘way of life’ they come armed, proudly displaying their AR15s (and sometimes inert rocket launchers and other ordinance)

Armed protesters demonstrate against Covid-19 lockdown at Michigan capitol

“Hundreds of protesters, some armed, gathered inside Michigan’s state capitol on Thursday as state lawmakers debated the Democratic governor’s request to extend her emergency powers to combat coronavirus.”

The Kyle Rittenhouse and the alleged murderers in the Aumaud Arbery trials bring this into specific relief, to quote Michael J Fox’s character in “American President”.

Rittenhouse went to a different state, armed himself, and went somewhere hoping trouble would find him and it did. The jury finding him innocent on all counts has some in America cheering and some in tears. That is a great example of what is wrong in America today. Some embrace life. Some cheapen it.

The ones that cheapen it claim to be pro-life. Not pro-nutrition, pro-healthcare, pro-housing, pro-justice, just pro a person yet to be born. Once they are born, all bets are off, including being shot by an armed teenager from a different state.

The attorney for one of the alleged murderers in the Arbery case is comparing black pastors coming to his town to a lynching party.

He needs to study the term lynching. Lynching was a mob going into a jail or courthouse and seizing the defendant, overpowering the guards/jailers/deputies/police and killing the accused.

Our shame: The sins of our past laid bare for all to see

We were wrong.

On the day when people from across the globe come to our capital city to consider the sordid history of slavery and lynching and try to reconcile the horrors of our past, the Montgomery Advertiser recognizes its own shameful place in the history of these dastardly, murderous deeds.”

‘There will be lynchings’: How the Advertiser failed victims of racial terror

“It was a ghastly explosion of terror.

On Sept. 29, 1919, a Montgomery mob kidnapped Miles (or Relius) Phifer and Robert Crosky as they were being transported to jail over allegations they assaulted two white women in separate incidents. The masked group drove the two men — both veterans — to some woods near Hughes Ferry Road, and told them to run. They then shot them multiple times. Phifer, reported to be wearing a U.S. Army uniform, was killed on the spot. Crosky later died at a hospital.

Early the next morning, a band of white men broke into a Montgomery hospital where Will Temple, accused of killing a Montgomery police officer, was being treated for a head wound. The mob overpowered two policemen on duty then shot Temple to death in his hospital ward.”

The fact the defendants in this case are getting a fair trial and a verdict from a jury literally (11 to 1 white) of their peers is the opposite of lynching. The fact the attorney said this proves my point.
